I color-coordinated the sections to reflect each person's personality best. I had the most fun creating my dad’s section. Although it was strictly white fabric, I used coffee to stain it and add texture, as an homage to his favorite hobby. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404030737-VDBB2ADGG76QJWTPTOPM/IMG_4501+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404030972-HK5JK451E4K5H9A7TGXE/IMG_5128+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404041296-JRJMT2CN3YG363CS25QE/IMG_5139+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/e3fc5b6d-0995-45b8-a438-0fec9d087baa/IMG_5137+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” - Cyanotype I included letters from my family about their favorite family dinner memories and pictures of us cooking or enjoying meals together. To capture their unique handwriting, I used a process called “Cyanotype” to print their letters directly onto scrap muslin. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404531192-IF8VKTC6F396EKLIJMM1/IMG_3985+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404531746-J33QIX3OCDHWINA0K3WP/IMG_4388+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1720404532147-K77K2UZ3PVX4YVQZYNPU/IMG_4459+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/826ccf65-49fc-41e3-8a67-3784d70addb8/IMG_5144+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” - Quilting I practiced quilting by layering a recycled tablecloth, batting in the middle, and patchwork recycled fabric on top to assemble the final piece. The original tablecloth had beautiful frilly sides, which I incorporated into the sides of my project so they would drape down the table. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1715130640916-S7ZJ1Y4T30HYL4LR81US/Home+Is+Where+We+Eat-23+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” - Embroidery For the final touches, I hand-embroidered X’s to border each family member’s “seat.” I used red embroidery thread as a symbolic way to represent connection. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/1715130449967-VOUD75HK44BV7TEBLMN4/Home+Is+Where+We+Eat-26+Large.jpeg Blog - “Home Is Where We Eat” - Make it stand out Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. https://www.davaneydesigns.com/blog/japan-series monthly 0.5 2025-08-11 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/d02f7b1d-e468-42eb-be93-ae7c5e8f0b9b/DavaneyOverton-51.jpg Blog - Japan Series https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a42ce8d424294c6f450151/09574d72-e2b3-4fa5-9449-61ce01d3c04d/DavaneyOverton-30.jpg Blog - Japan Series In the series, I painted the places I've been to, broken pottery from beaches, teapots, and other symbolic objects, and food.
